These beer battered onion rings are crispy, sweet and the perfect side dish.
They are made by slicing onions into rings, dipping them in batter and frying them until they are golden brown. You are left with the perfect crunch on the outside and a soft onion on the inside. They can be enjoyed on their own or you can serve them with your favorite dipping sauce.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR BEER BATTERED ONION RINGS
1. Sweet Onion
2. Dragon Stout
3. Baking Powder
4. Salt
6. Cornstarch – While you don’t need cornstarch for a batter, I highly recommend it, as it results in crispier onion rings.
7. Garlic Powder
8. Paprika
9. Oil – For frying
10. Ice Cubes – To keep the batter cold. When the batter is cold, it doesn’t absorb as much oil, which leads to crispier and lighter onion rings.
HOW TO MAKE BEER BATTERED ONION RINGS
1. Peel and cut an onion into 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch rings. Ensure to remove the thin clear membrane on the inside of the onion as this will shrink during frying, potentially tearing a hole in your batter.
2. Mix all your dry ingredients, and coat each onion ring in the flour mixture.
3. Set the onions aside and add your stout and ice to your flour mixture to make your batter.
4. Coat each onion ring in the batter, taking care to let the excess batter fall off.
5. Heat a pot of oil and use a thermometer to test once it has reached to 365°F.
6. Add your onion rings to the hot oil and fry for approximately 2-3 minutes or until evenly brown on both sides. Only do a few at a time to not crowd the pot.
7. Rest your fried onion rings on a wire rack to drain the excess oil.
8. Serve warm.
TYPE OF ONIONS TO USE?
You can use either white, yellow or sweet onions, but the flavor will vary depending on the type used. Sweet onion, as the name suggests, is the sweetest of the three. Whereas yellow onions have a mild sweetness with a more pungent flavor and white onions have a sharper flavor than yellow onions.
DO I NEED TO USE A SPECIFIC BEER?
You can use any beer you prefer. However, I used dragon stout, as that is what I had on hand. Do keep in mind that Dragon stout is a sweeter type of beer if you choose to use it in this recipe. You can also opt for ginger ale or club soda if you want to do without the beer. The flavor will also vary depending on the liquid you use.
