Jamaican Red Peas Soup is a hearty Jamaican dish that is rich in flavor and packed with fiber, protein and plenty of other nutrients. It is made with red kidney beans “peas”, coconut milk, beef soup mix or stock and ground provisions (root vegetables). This soup is the perfect comfort food to warm you up on a chilly day.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED FOR JAMAICAN RED PEAS SOUP

1. Dried Red Kidney Beans

2. Plantain

3. Scallion/Green Onion

4. Fresh Thyme

5. Coconut Milk

6. Salt

7. Water

8. Potatoes

9. Beef Soup Mix – I used Grace Pumpkin Beef Soup

10. Stewing Beef – I only use 1/4 lb, but you can use more or omit it for a meatless soup. You can even substitute it with salted pigtails, just ensure to boil off the excess salt before adding it to the pot.

11. Flour (to make your spinners)

HOW TO MAKE JAMAICAN RED PEAS SOUP

1. Soak your red kidney beans overnight in enough water to cover it (about 1 inch above the peas).

2. Add your soaked kidney beans (water included), beef and water to a pot and cook on medium high heat for 30 minutes or until the peas are tender.

3. Add in your coconut milk, beef soup mix (strain the noodles), scallion, salt and thyme and cook for 10 minutes.

4. Add in your plantain, potatoes and any other vegetables of your choosing and cook for 15 minutes or until tender.

5. Spinners– Combine 1/8-1/4 tsp salt, 1 cup of flour and 1/2 cup of water and knead your dough. Section your dough into your desired portions and roll it lengthwise.

6. Add your spinners to your pot and cook for 5 minutes.

HOW TO STORE IT

Fridge – You can store this in the fridge for 3 to 4 days in an airtight container.

Freezer – You can also freeze this for up to 3 months in an airtight container.

FAQS

Why is it called red peas soup? In Jamaica, we refer to kidney beans as peas.

What are spinners? Spinners are dumplings rolled length wise that are typically cooked in stews and soups.

What vegetables can I add? You can add yam, sweet potato, corn, carrot, chayote (chocho), cassava, eddoes/dasheen/coco yam/taro (vegetables from the same family). This is all up to personal preference. I only reserve certain of the above vegetables for chicken soup and others for peas soup, as that is what I am used to.

What other seasonings can I use? You can flavor your pot with scotch bonnet peppers if you like it spicy (boil it whole with the stem on), pimento berries, garlic, and beef stock or bouillon cubes if you cannot get the soup mix.
